Jesus Christ: The Preferred Standard

Welcome, friends and guests. I'm pleased that you came this way today. Permit me to start today's newsletter with a short story... ...

Physics One-Oh-One. The first lecture of the day.

With a black leather folder under his left armpit the professor walks into the lecture hall. A brown tweed jacket on black flannel slacks, and a pair of horn-rimmed reading glasses on a grayish-white bearded face completes the "intellectual" appearance of the seasoned teacher.

Today's topic? Measurement. "Oh not again!" says Jack in his thoughts. "I thought I left that in Secondary School?" he says to the girl on the right. Thankfully the professor doesn't hear Jack's statements.

Anyway, Physics is the science of any physical whatever. Well, mostly physical whatever: you know those high-sounding words physicists use to make us think they are doing so much for mankind (my friend NDK may want to disagree, no vex sha). Structures, quantities, fundamental or base units, parameters, phenomenon, blah-blah-blah

Especially the last one, I mean, phenomenon. The first time you hear in class you begin to ask yourself why there is even a place called school. I remember my classmates then quickly got the handle of it but could not resist infusing it by force into every definition in every subject. Imagine, "Respiration is the phenomenon... ..." Anyway, whatever!

Sorry for digressing. Lets get back to Jack discomfort... ...

The professor said, "Physics is based on measurement. We discover physics by learning how to measure the quantities that are involved in Physics." He continued, "We measure each physical quantity (e.g. length) in its own units (e.g. meter), by comparison with a standard."

As he rumbled on and on, Jack's mind wandered away and back till he said something that caught the attention of the bored student. The worldwide acceptable definition of the standard meter, the unit of length, has been changed three times; all within 112 years (between 1971 and 1983). Can you imagine?

The physicists said they were seeking to adopt better precision. Since we are in 2015, we can see that its been thirty-two years since the last change, and I am wondering how soon NDuKa and his generation of physicists would change the definition again. *Laughs!*

Now on a more serious note, I ask the obvious question: "What is the best standard that is available unto man?" I daresay one quality stands out: perfection! It is the sum of all the other suggestible qualities. PERFECTION implies ultimate precision hence there is no room for change. No need for an upgrade. Not a chance for an improvement.

I was in Church the other day and as the worship was going on, the song with the lyrics "Jesus, how I love calling your Name, everyday your Name is the same" was sung. I guess you know the song popularized by the gospel singer, Shirley Caesar?

What is a NAME? A Name is what somebody or something is called: a word, term, or phrase by which somebody or something is known and distinguished from other people or things. A Name is a person's reputation. O Jeez! I think I like the last sentence better.

A person's Name is, manner of speaking, that person's REPUTATION. It is the sum of one's personality, description, and abilities. You see, most times, a perfect definition is everything. Hmmm, Jesus Christ, what a wonderful Person He is! If His Name doesn't change then His Personality doesn't. Heb.13:8 boldly declare this infallible truth, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever."

Through all the metal ages, the bronze age or the iron age or whatever, Jesus never needed an improvement; He is the Word of God: quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Heb.4:12). No metallic weapon of man could best Him, Him who cuts beyond the physical realm.

When it became the nuclear age, how could He be frightened? If by Him all things consist (Col.1:15-19), then nuclear scientists have yet to realize that He is responsible for the power that binds an electron to a nucleus as much as the force that keep the planets in their orbits; so for all I care let them continue to run in circles, chasing shadows.

Jet age? Information age? Are you impressed by how quickly information is transferred from one place to another? Are you amazed at the technological breakthroughs of satellite-uplink, video conferencing, Bluetooth, Near-Field-Communication, and so on and so forth? I tell you, these and more cannot and never will intimidate my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Because He is the One who can cause great and remarkable things to happen within a twinkle of an eye. He is here, He is there, and He is everywhere; all at the same time! And if you dont know this already, He is God! The Father clearly establishes this awesome fact in Heb.1:8"But unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom." Also see Psa.45:6.

While mere mortals like us are still struggling with the enormity of the truth and mystery of the Person of Jesus Christ, God demonstrated long ago, that there is no better and higher standard than Himself.

When He made a promise to Abraham He swore by Himself (Gen.22:16). Referring to the time He laid the foundations of the earth, it is as if He was asking Job, "When I held the line on one end, who was at the other end to take the measurements?" See Job 38:4-6.

I tell you the truth, an awesome wholesome truth. Jesus is SO constant! He is outside of time, not controlled by the tick-tock insinuations of our periodic machines. He is never in a hurry yet He is always on time.

Heb.1:10-12 (c.f. Psa.102:25-26): "And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail."

All things that stand the test of time aren't capable of standing the test of fire, with one exception. Heb.12:29 says, "For our God is a consuming fire." (c.f. Deut.4:24) He Himself is fire. You see, how can Jesus Christ ever malfunction? He is the Standard used in Heaven: His Name, His Word, His Blood, His Will, His everything; of course, Himself!

See all those lawyers out there, making money out of the law? They like saying the law is an ass. The Apostle Paul called the Law of Moses a slave master. For what the law could not do, Christ came to perfect. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. See Rom.8:3.

That stockbroker is happy being called a smart professional because so far, he has succeeded in tinkering with people's fortunes, and making good returns on investments. Have you ever realised that while Dow Jones Averages fluctuates, the value of the precious blood of Christ never drops in the Universal stock market; by the blood are even all the vessels of worship in Heaven sanctified. Abeg jare, this Jesus Christ is TOO much joor!

Are you already concluding that I talk too much? Well, I will not apologize for talking and talking about the Saviour of my soul, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, my Righteousness. Yet I shall not end this piece without darting the mathematicians.

When you are in their company they begin to talk about differentiation, integration, and all the jargons of tensile calculus. Because they felt they know so much, they have termed themselves to be the bedrock on which we stand. Can you imagine: Mathematics is the bedrock of Science, Ha? Such arrogance!

One simple question sweeps the rug off their feet. Only ask them, "What is the result of any number divided by zero?" and in trying to hide his confusion he tells you: "infinity" or at best, "undefined." Well, I feel sorry for you! If only they would all come to understand that Jesus Christ is the Mystery of the Zero, the Big Bang Theory would be swept into eternity's trash bin.

I could go on and on, but permit me to stop here. If you were patient to read through this article then I must commend you for accommodating me. And if you love the Lord Jesus, I encourage you to keep talking about Him to anyone and everyone. He is so awesome, isn't He?

I'd love to read your thoughts and comments, as well. Don't forget to share this newsletter with your family and friends. God bless you real good.

Shalom!
